Designs in Copper
Finding my voice in copper has been the singular clarifying discovery in my artistic career.
Tracery 157 is an artisan studio in Richmond, Virginia, founded in 2013 by copper wrangler and designer Cathy G. Vaughn. Every item offered is original, designed and crafted by hand. Works are primarily rendered in copper. Many pieces integrate wood, glass, or stone.
I developed a new process this past year. Looking for a way to add dimension and visual interest to some of my fitted tracery open work, I started exploring different methods of verdigris on sheet copper that were tied to the physical world. I began with found objects, specifically little scraps of copper pipe. From that, I expanded to organic matter. Working with plants gave me a new palette of texture and colors to explore.
